Mario 3D Land is a platform game for the Nintendo 3DS console system. It was first released in Japan on November 13th, 2011, followed by releases in North America, Europe and Australia later that month. Developed by Nintendo EAD Tokyo and published by Nintendo, it is the sixth original 3D platform game starring Mario. The story follows Mario as he attempts to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser while also saving the many Toads imprisoned within the castles of each world.
The gameplay of Super Mario 3D Land is based on that of previous games in the series; however, levels are designed with a more linear structure compared to those in Super Mario Galaxy 2 which gives players more freedom to explore. As such, coins are hidden more sparsely throughout levels compared to earlier titles\u2014instead they appear mainly at checkpoints and other specific locations\u2014and power-ups are less common. In addition to running and jumping (which can now be done simultaneously), players can use various power-ups such as Tanooki Suit tails which give Mario limited flight abilities or Boomerang Bros suits which allow him throw boomerangs at enemies. The game also features a new item called the Statue Leaf which allows players to transform into stone statues allowing them to avoid enemy attacks and cross lava pits unharmed; this ability replaces the Ground Pound move featured in earlier games.
Super Mario 3D Land received critical acclaim upon release; reviewers praised its level design, graphics and replay value although some criticised its length relative to other games in the series. Within two weeks of release it had sold over five million copies worldwide making it one of the best selling games on the Nintendo 3DS system
