In Super Smash Flash, a side special move is executed by pressing the directional button in the opposite direction of the character’s original movement direction. For example, to perform a neutral aerial with Kirby, you would press down+B.
Side specials can be used for various purposes, such as halting an enemy from approaching or damaging them from behind. They can also be effective when recovering; for instance, if you use Mario’s Up Special while touching a platform edge or ledge, he will jump high into the air and then land on the platform above him.
Side specials come in two types: active and passive. An active side special is automatically activated when it is used; for example, Zelda’s Fairies Reflect projectiles and Fox’s Fire Foxes are both active side specials. Passive side specials require additional input before they are activated; for instance, Pikmin 3’s Down Special requires you to hold down A in order to use it repeatedly rapidly like an automatic weapon fire.
Regardless of their type, all sides specials have one common attribute: they expend durability gauge units (DGUs) by performing certain actions while executing them (such as landing), which must be replenished before they can be used again. This makes strategy especially important when deciding which side special to use; choosing one that will inflict damage but also uses up few DGUs may give your team an advantage over opponents who choose less-effective moves that don’t deplete their stocks as quickly.
