The pinpeat is a traditional Cambodian orchestra that consists of a variety of instruments, including drums, xylophones, and bamboo trumpets. The name “pinpeat” is derived from the French word “pinceau,” meaning “brush.” This is in reference to the way the musicians hold their instruments\u2014like brushes\u2014while playing.
The pinpeat has been used for centuries in Cambodia to accompany religious ceremonies and royal processions. Today, it is still used to celebrate important national events such as New Year’s Day and Independence Day.
The typical pinpeat ensemble consists of about 50 musicians. The most common instruments are two- or three-stringed lutes, metal zithers, bamboo trumpets, and drums. The music is typically very lively and energetic, with fast tempos and complex rhythms.
If you’d like to hear some traditional Cambodian music, I recommend checking out some recordings of the pinpeat orchestra. There are several excellent CDs available online or at your local music store.
