Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends is an animated children’s television series produced by Britt Allcroft and David Mitton for Thames Television. The series is based on The Railway Series of books by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry. Twenty-six episodes were produced, each one about seven minutes long.
The first episode of Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends aired on ITV in the United Kingdom on September 4, 1984. In the United States, PBS began airing the series in 1989 under the title Shining Time Station. Reruns continued to air on PBS until 2009.
Shining Time Station was also adapted into a feature-length film called Thomas and the Magic Railroad, which was released in theaters in 2000. Despite mixed reviews from critics, Thomas and the Magic Railroad was a box office success, grossing over $19 million worldwide against its $5 million budget. A second feature-length film based on Thomas & Friends, called Day of the Diesels, was released direct-to-DVD on September 6, 2011.
