Based on the findings of a recent study, it is estimated that approximately 8 million people in the United States play the Game of Thrones (GOT) mobile game each month. The game, which was released in 2014 by developer HBO, allows players to assume the role of one of seven characters from the popular television series and complete quests in order to win rewards.
The study, which was conducted by researchers at App Annie and Sensor Tower, used data from both Google Play and Apple’s App Store to estimate player numbers. While there is no definitive answer as to how many people actually watch GOT, the study found that there is a strong correlation between game downloads and viewership numbers. In other words, those who are interested in playing GOT are also likely to be fans of the show.
This isn’t particularly surprising given that HBO has long been known for its high-quality original programming. What is perhaps more interesting is just how popular GOT has become since its release four years ago. According to App Annie’s report, the game was downloaded over 90 million times in 2018 alone and brought in $152 million in revenue – up from $56 million in 2017. This growth can largely be attributed to increased interest in Asia, where downloads grew by 245% last year.
So what does all this mean for HBO? Well, aside from making a lot of money off of GOT gamers (the company reportedly takes a 30% cut of all revenue generated by the game), it shows that there is still a lot of potential for growth when it comes to interactive entertainment based on existing IPs (intellectual properties). In fact, with Netflix now getting into gaming with its own title called Stranger Things 3: The Game, it will be interesting to see how HBO responds – especially if GOT continues its trend of growing popularity overseas.
