In the US, there are more people in prison for theft than any other crime. In 2013, 1 out of every 50 adults was incarcerated due to theft-related offenses ( Bureau of Justice Statistics). Many people assume that this number is lower now because of recent Prison Reform movements, but the fact remains that Theft is one of the most common crimes behind bars. At a nationwide level, nearly one-third (31%) of all prisoners are serving time for property crimes such as burglary or theft (Bureau of Justice Statistics). This shows that there is still a lot of work to be done when it comes to reforming our criminal justice system and addressing the rampant problem of theft in our society.
