Cars Mater-National Championship is a racing video game based on the Cars franchise. The game was developed by Rainbow Studios and published by THQ. It was released on November 7, 2007, for the PlayStation 2, Wii, Xbox 360, and Nintendo DS. A port for iOS was released on October 15, 2009.
The gameplay of Cars Mater-National Championship is similar to that of the previous game in the series, Cars Race-O-Rama. Players can choose from over 20 characters from the Cars franchise, including Lightning McQueen and Tow Mater. They can then race in one of eight different locations, such as Radiator Springs and Italy. The game features three different types of races: circuit races are standard races where players must complete a set number of laps; sprints are races where players must reach the finish line before time runs out; and takedowns involve destroying all opponents before crossing the finish line. In addition to the singleplayer mode, there is also a multiplayer mode which allows up to four players to race together locally or online.[1]
Cars Mater-National Championship received mixed reviews from critics upon release. On Metacritic, the PlayStation 2 version holds a score of 66/100,[2]the Wii version 68/100,[3]the Xbox 360 version 67/100,[4]and the Nintendo DS version 63/100.[5] IGN awarded it an 8/10 overall,[1] praising its “fun” gameplay but criticizing its lack of innovation when compared to other racing games available at the time
