The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) is the world’s largest motorsports governing body. The NHRA oversees more than 1,200 races each year in the United States and Canada. The NHRA has a lengthy history that can be traced back to the late 1920s. The first officially sanctioned drag race took place in 1948.
The NHRA Drag Racing: Countdown to the Championship is a ten-race series that determines the champion of professional drag racing. The playoffs begin in September and conclude in November with the crowning of a new champion.
There are four categories of competition in NHRA Drag Racing: Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle. Drivers in these categories battle it out for points during qualifying rounds and eliminations at each race.
The point system is designed so that drivers can compete for the championship even if they do not win every race. At the end of the season, drivers are ranked based on their total number of points earned throughout the year. The driver who accumulates the most points is crowned champion.
This year’s championship was exciting right down to the final race! In Top Fuel, Tony Schumacher was looking to become just the second three-time champion in history; while Antron Brown was trying to defend his title from last year. In Funny Car, John Force was vying for his seventeenth championship; while Matt Hagan aimed to stop him short. In Pro Stock, Jason Line was seeking his third consecutive championship; while Erica Enders-Stevens hoped to finally break through and win her first title). And finally, in Pro Stock Motorcycle, Eddie Krawiec was looking for his fourth straight championship; while Andrew Hines aimed to spoil his streak).
Schumacher ended up winning his third Top Fuel championship after edging out Brown by just two points! Force won his seventeenth Funny Car championship; Line secured his third consecutive Pro Stock title; and Krawiec successfully defended his Pro Stock Motorcycle crown). It was an exciting end to an exciting season!
