The 2006 FIFA World Cup was the 18th FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international football championship for men’s national teams. It was held from 9 June to 9 July 2006 in Germany, which won the right to host the event in July 2000. Teams representing 198 national football associations from all six populated continents participated in the qualification process which began in September 2003. Thirty-one teams qualified from this process, along with the host nation, Germany, for the finals tournament.
It was the second time that Germany staged the competition, and ninth time that it was held in Europe. Italy were the defending champions, having won their fourth title at UEFA Euro 2004. They were knocked out of contention at this year’s tournament by France on 7 July following a 1–1 draw after extra time and a 5–3 penalty shootout loss; France went on to win their first World Cup title since 1998. The final took place at Berlin’s Olympiastadion between Italy and France on 9 July 2006. The match ended 1–1 after extra time and saw Zinedine Zidane sent off for headbutting Marco Materazzi in response to verbal provocation; Italy then won 5–3 on penalties to claim their fourth World Cup title overall (and second as hosts).
