Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader is an American quiz game show that aired on Fox from October 2007 to June 2009. The program was revived by Nickelodeon in March 2019. The show features adult contestants who must answer questions taken from elementary school textbooks to win money.
The format of the game is based on the British game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, which itself is based on the original French version, Qui Veut Gagner Des Millions?. The maximum prize amount for the U.S. version was $1,000,000; this was later reduced to $500,000 and then eliminated altogether as the result of budget cuts at Fox Broadcasting Company. On November 26, 2008, contestant Jonny Gilbert became the first and only person ever to win $500,000 on Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?
Nickelodeon announced on January 28, 2019 that they were reviving the series with a new season premiering on March 29, 2019 with host Jeff Foxworthy. New episodes will air weekdays at 3:00pm ET/PT (2:00pm Central). Like its predecessor series, each episode will have five adult contestants competing for cash prizes ranging from $10,000-$50,000.
