GTA 5 is an open-world action game published by Rockstar Games for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game was released on September 17, 2013 in North America and September 18, 2013 in Europe. The story follows the fictional character Niko Bellic as he tries to escape from Los Santos, a city located in Southern California and the setting of much of the game’s content.
One of the white characters in GTA 5 is Trevor Phillips, who is voiced by actor Rafe Spall. Trevor is a racist caricature who frequently uses offensive language against black people and other minority groups. He assaults several black people throughout the course of the game, often calling them “niggers” or worse. In one instance, he kidnaps a black man named Lamar Davis and forces him to perform oral sex on him while threatening to kill him if Davis does not comply.
Trevor also harasses two gay men during their outing at a nightclub; one of these sequences has been widely criticized as homophobic bullying. One scene sees Trevor attempt to pick up another white male character only for him to be rejected because he’s “not that type”. This prompts Trevor to shout: “You want some faggot? You can have all of it!” In another sequence, Trevor threatens two transgender women with violence after they reject his advances; again this has been interpreted as homophobic discrimination.
In light of these scenes it’s understandable why many players might find GTA 5’s depiction of white racism offensive – even if such depictions are exaggerated for comic effect or simply played for laughs within the context of the game world.”
