Losing a pet can be a significant stressor for some people. Pets provide companionship, security and love, and may become an important part of the family dynamic. Sadly, pets can also die or get lost, which can be especially traumatic for their owners. In fact, research has shown that losing a pet is one of the top five sources of major stress in Americans.
Pet ownership usually provides great joy and satisfaction, but it is not always easy to deal with loss. Some tips to assist those who have lost a pet include: seeking professional help if necessary; staying positive; expressing sadness but remaining supportive; consoling oneself by celebrating memories; and seeking out animal-friendly activities to fill the time void left by the pet’s absence. Losing a pet can be tough, but providing support will make it easier for those affected to cope.
