The Great Waldo Search is an edutainment video game released for the NES and MS-DOS in 1992. The game was developed by Sunsoft and published by THQ. In the game, the player takes on the role of Wally, who is tasked with finding Waldo within a group of people.
The premise of the game is simple – find Wally (Waldo) among a crowd of other people. To make things more challenging, Wally can be hiding in any number of different places at any given time. The objective is to locate him as quickly as possible before time runs out. If you’re able to find Wally five times in a row, you’ll move on to the next level.
A few years ago, rumors began to circulate that The Great Waldo Search would be making its way to Steam. However, there has been no official confirmation from either Sunsoft or THQ regarding this matter. So far, both companies have remained silent about it – which has only served to fuel speculation among nostalgic gamers everywhere.
Interestingly enough, The Great Waldo Search wasn’t actually the first game to feature Waldo (or Wally). That distinction goes to 1986’s Where’s Waldo?, which was created by Martin Handford and published by Hodder & Stoughton Ltd.. In that particular title, players had to scour various illustrated scenes in order to track down Waldo (and his dog Woof).
Since its initial release over two decades ago, The Great Waldo Search has garnered something of a cult following – thanks in no small part to its challenging gameplay and retro aesthetic. Undoubtedly, many fans would love nothing more than see it make a comeback via Steam or some other digital distribution platform.
