Xbox 360 (XBLA) is ending on April 15, 2020. Microsoft has announced that they will be discontinuing the Xbox 360 console and its online service, Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA), in order to focus on their newer gaming platforms, Xbox One and Windows 10.
Gamers who still own an Xbox 360 console or use XBLA can continue to do so until April 15th, 2020. After this date, both the console and XBLA will no longer function. Microsoft has encouraged gamers to switch to their newer gaming platforms, as they offer a more immersive experience with better features.
Despite being discontinued, the Xbox 360 had a successful run. Since its release in 2005, it sold over 84 million units worldwide and amassed a library of over 3,000 games. The platform was especially popular with indie developers; many smaller studios got their start by developing titles for the Xbox 360 market.
The decision to end support for the Xbox 360 may seem sudden, but it’s actually been in the works for some time now. Microsoft first hinted at discontinuing the console back in 2016 when they released the Xbox One S – a slimmer version of the original Xbox One that also supported 4K Ultra HD playback. At that time, they said that they would continue to support the platform “for years to come.” However, it seems that plans have since changed and they are now ready to move on from the aging hardware altogether.
