SpongeBob SquarePants is an animated television series created by marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg. The show first aired on Nickelodeon in 1999 and has since been syndicated and broadcast around the world. SpongeBob is a yellow sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea, along with his pet snail Gary, friend Squidward Tentacles, and neighbor Patrick Star. The show typically revolves around SpongeBob’s efforts to save his home from various calamities, as well as his interactions with other characters such as Squidward or Patrick.
The origins of SpongeBob SquarePants are unknown, but it is generally believed that Hillenburg created the character while working at the University of California, Santa Barbara’s Marine Biology Laboratory. He began developing SpongeBob during his spare time after he was fired from his job at McDonalds for refusing to clean a urinal with bleach (a scene which later appeared in the episode “Bubble Buddy”). After creating several sketches of different characters, Hillenburg pitched them to Nickelodeon president Fred Seibert who green-lighted production of an entire series based on them.
