In the early 1960s, Bob Kane and Bill Finger created DC’s first superhero team, The Teen Titans. Originally consisting of Wonder Girl, Kid Flash, Aqualad, and Speedy (later replaced by Wonder Woman), the group quickly became popular with readers thanks to their quirky humor and exciting action sequences. In 1964, writer-artist Dick Giordano took over as artist for The Teen Titans and introduced new members including Starfire (who had been created by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez), Raven (created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson), Beast Boy (created by John Byrne) and Hawkman (created by Dennis O’Neil).
The Teen Titans remained a popular comic book series throughout the 1960s and 1970s. In 1984, writer/artist Jim Lee revitalized the team in an epic story arc called “The Judas Contract.” This storyline saw the death of longtime member Robin at the hands of Darkseid, who sought to recruit young superheroes to serve as his personal army. As a result of Robin’s death, The Teen Titans disbanded for several years until they were brought back together again in 1992 by writers Scott Lobdell and Fabian Nicieza. Since then, they have continued to be one of DC Comics’ most successful superhero teams.
