In 1916, Nicholas Cutinha was a Brazilian immigrant working on the railroad in California when he enlisted in the US Army to fight in World War I. He quickly rose through the ranks and became a sergeant major, one of the most highly decorated soldiers of his time. On October 3, 1918, near Verdun, France, Cutinha single-handedly destroyed two German machine gun nests, saving his fellow troops from certain death. For this heroic act, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor\u2014the highest military honor in the United States.
Though little is known about Nicholas Cutinha’s life after World War I (he seems to have disappeared from public record), his bravery and heroism are undeniable. His story is a reminder that anyone can make a difference when it matters most.
