The Home Alone series is one of the most successful franchises in movie history. The first film, released in 1990, made over $285 million at the box office and spawned a sequel, released five years later. That sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, made over $173 million – respectable numbers but far short of the original’s haul.
Why did the second film in the franchise perform so much worse than the first? There are several reasons. First and foremost is that the novelty of seeing a young child outwit burglars had worn off by 1992; audiences were no longer surprised by Kevin McCallister’s antics. Additionally, Home Alone 2 was simply not as well-made as its predecessor. It suffered from weak writing and poor character development; Macaulay Culkin himself has said that he was “embarrassed” by his performance in the movie.
Finally – and this is perhaps most telling – Hollywood had changed significantly between 1990 and 1992. The rise of independent cinema meant that studios were no longer willing to put up big bucks for broad comedies like Home Alone 2; they were more interested in smaller, quirkier films like Reservoir Dogs or Wayne’s World. As a result, Home Alone 2 was not given the same level of marketing push as its predecessor, and audiences responded accordingly.
