Gears of War 3 is a video game that was released in September 2011. The game allows players to choose between different levels of difficulty, with the harder difficulties providing a greater challenge but also awarding more experience points and rewards. Upon starting a new game, however, players are automatically set to the “hard” difficulty regardless of their previous choice, meaning that they must start at level 1 and work their way up again.
The decision to reset players back to level 1 for the harder difficulties has been met with criticism by some gamers, who argue that it makes no sense why they should have to replay earlier levels when they have already completed them on a lower difficulty setting. Some feel that this ruins the sense of progression and achievement that comes with playing through a video game.
Others have argued, however, that the resetting of player levels is necessary in order to provide an adequate challenge on the harder settings. Without it, they claim, gamers would be able to simply breeze through the game on easier difficulties and then move on to the harder ones without having earned any of the rewards available there. This would defeat one of Gears of War 3’s main objectives – providing an engaging gaming experience which tests players’ skills and abilities.
